Hutchinson Island Map
Hutchinson Island is an unspoiled prestigious barrier island in the middle of the Treasure Coast of Florida. This natural beauty stretches s a narrow 23 miles from the top of Martin County into St Lucie County. A drive to the beach on this exclusive island is as scenic as the beach itself.
Hutchinson Island received its name back in 1811 when James Hutchinson received a grant from the Spanish Governor of Florida, unfortunately for Hutchinson his island retreat was pillaged by pirates destroying his land and crops. Because so few people resided on the island at the time a house of refuge was built in 1876 for anyone who was passing through or needed help.
Fast forward some years and by 1915 the McCoy family owned the area of Blue Lagoon of the Coral Strand (now Sailfish Point) who until 1920 made a trade from transporting tourists on the Indian River. This business then slumped so McCoy made himself famous by becoming a rumrunner, it was said that McCoy was a man of his word, his seal on a barrel of rum meant it was genuine. Some people today believe that this is where the saying “The Real McCoy” came from.
Forward again and in the late 70’s to early 80’s the community of Sailfish Point was opened with its high standard of quality. Jack Nickolas was chosen to design one of the first courses on the island which resulted in the 18-hole course stretching along the Indian River, Atlantic Ocean, and inland lakes.
Today Hutchinson Island is a non-crowded haven of beauty with much of it being left natural as the day it was discovered. From April through to September the island becomes a nesting ground for loggerhead turtles with 5 species that migrate to the island every year.
There are about three dozen beaches on the island and each being unique it its own way. Some are perfect for fishing, others are great for diving due to the 200-year-old ship wrecks submerged off shore, others are surrounded by thick woods. The best thing is the beaches are not over crowded and most times you will find you have the beach to yourself.
Amenities available on the island including gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants, and more means you will never have to leave but should you wish to venture out the local towns of Stuart, Jensen Beach, and Fort Pierce are all rich in history and only moments away.
You will always find plenty to do on this island whether its marveling at the wildlife, or marine life, enjoying the nature trails and biking trails, or involving your self in the many outdoor activities such as kayaking and canoeing. Places of interest also include the Elliott Museum, Gilberts Bar House of Refuge, and the Florida Oceanographic Society Coastal Science Center.
Life on Hutchinson Island isn’t just a day at the beach it’s a day filled with fascinating eco systems, plenty of outdoor activity and one of a kind experiences.
This prestigious island has a range of real estate options available so speak to an agent today to discuss your needs.
