Lake Worth Map
Lake Worth takes its name from the gorgeous lake to its east – Lake Worth Lagoon, which opens to the Atlantic Ocean through the Lake Worth Inlet. Known as ‘Where the Tropics Begin’, this coastal city is populated by beautiful tropical foliage throughout such as coconut palms, mahogany, and royal poinciana. The gorgeous tropical Florida weather also plays a big part, as the city is the northern most point of the subtropics.
Bordering West Palm Beach to the north and Lantana to the south, Lake Osborne to the west and the Atlantic Ocean and Lagoon to the east, the city is 60 miles north of Downtown Miami and spans 7 square miles.
Lake Worth has a rich cultural history and the main street, Lake Avenue, is home to some of the oldest commercial structures in South Florida, such as the Lake Worth Playhouse. The downtown area has recently seen a massive growth in popularity and now you can find many cafes, art galleries, restaurants, stores, and bars and nightclubs lining the sidewalks. This area hosts several popular festivals throughout the year such as the Street Painting Festival, and the Lake Worth Festival of Trees. There is also a semi-weekly celebration called ‘Evenings on the Avenue’ which is always popular with locals and visitors. The city is multi-cultural and dynamic, and well known for its charming residential areas, and artistic and vibrant downtown area.
Lake Worth is lucky enough to contain lots of public parks and open spaces, such as Bryant Park and the Snook Islands Natural Area. Here you can enjoy kayaking, fishing, and a nature walk around the mangroves. You might catch sight of dolphins, manatees, and any number of tropical birds that call this paradise home! The gorgeous beach is perfect for relaxing and enjoying the weather, and the Lake Worth Pier creates sandbars which make the area one of the most consistent spots for surfing in South Florida.
There are excellent public and private schools throughout the city, and the main campus of the Palm Beach State College is located here.
In 2019 a vote to change the name of the city to ‘Lake Worth Beach’ passed with a small margin – with the city saying that the name change will be ‘implemented slowly’. Watch this space!
